"If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them." Deuteronomy 15:7
We are traversing an age where hopelessness has taken the streets. Thousands and thousands of people live without roofs these days, without a home to return to. In seasons where the climate is cold and rainy the scene is worse: people in risky situations, that cannot get the necessary medical attention if they catch a disease, brothers going hungry and without protection.
On my way home I pass a bridge and a woman and her son live there. I always share my food with them but I thought I could help them even more. One day it was very cold, and the child had a constant cough, I decided to ask them if they wanted to shower at my house. The woman was a bit hesitant, but finally accepted. They took a bath and the child soon got better. We shared dinner as a family as we opened our hearts as brethren. It is very important to make gestures of affinity and solidarity when our neighbors find themselves in need, since God made us in pairs to love one another and with small gestures we can strongly impact the reality of our brethren.
When we enter the house irate after an exhausting day we are not doing anything more than giving continuity to the negative aspects we carry during the work day. Returning home after arguing with a co-worker, after witnessing an unjust situation, after having traversed horrendous traffic in the big cities. All these things can charge us with negativity and if at the moment of sharing with our loved ones we do not dedicate a moment to reflection over what we lived, we will surely pass on what happened to us in the form of unrest
It is important that before coming home we ponder on what we experienced and talk to God for a few minutes to find peace, to understand what we went through in a better way and make ourselves better christians. In the word we will find answers on how to conduct ourselves in the right way facing events that upset us. If we enter our homes frustrated, tired, and discouraged: what example will we be giving our children? Do we want them to also live the small upsets from hopelessness? Of course not, the important thing is to teach by example and be better people every day.
