What Do You Need in Order to Follow God?

“You must follow exactly the path that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you are to possess.” Deuteronomy 5:33
Reading in the Bible how some of Jesus' followers simply left everything behind to follow Him is something that inspires me but, at the same time, it also fills me with questions. One of the first things I wonder about is how such a sacrifice could be translated into modern times: Just thinking about leaving everything we have behind and what it has cost us to achieve living in this society often governed by consumption seems like an impossible task to me.
But if there is something that I realized after having traveled the Lord's path for some time, it is that to truly follow Him, we must have two very simple qualities: commitment and perseverance. We must understand that within God's perfection, our commitment must be complete so that we may be able gain full confidence in His mysterious will.
At the same time, we must not neglect our efforts and constantly demonstrate a persevering spirit, which will cause growth in our spiritual strength, an engine through which we ensure our transit down the Holy Father's path. We should therefore recognize our selective human nature that wants to choose what to obey from Christ's precepts and we should avoid it through sacrifice, commitment, and perseverance.
